***King was at “K9 Security Ireland” for residential training from the 29th of October to the 5th of December. I added the training report in the document section, which shows what they worked on. I've got him back for a few weeks now, and it's the same dog as always, with just that much more attention and fast reactions. In the video, you can see a little snippet of his training and it's clear he had a great time. And not to boast, but his trainer said: "I'd buy him off ya if I had the space. He's got a great personality and he's intelligent, loved working with him." ***

I had hoped to join the military this August but as I still have King and he deserves way better than the time, attention and training I’ll be able to give him then, I’ll be postponing my plans for next year. I take positions of power and the trust involved very seriously and fully believe that the most loyal thing I can do is to take ample time to search for another living situation for him to continue to thrive.

I will fly across the world or drive through Europe for a good match.

I am extremely proud of my training and regularly get compliments on his behaviour in various situations ***(Including his trainer at K9 Security Ireland)***. However, the good things will sweeten the deal rather than make you fall in love with King. He is no angel by any means.


To figure out if you and your situation are a good fit for King and vice versa I’ll start with the biggest deal breakers.
- King is a guard dog through and through. King never barks for nothing, he saves that for unknowns as warnings. He will alert you if he does not recognize a sound or situation as safe. He has a very chill demeanour, going to full alert when called upon and calming down soon after.
- King has a very high tolerance for serious physical and emotional pain. He’ll bitch about every minor inconvenience but for the big things you’ll have to be very observant.
- Quality cuddling time is maybe more important to King than anything. One-hand lazy scratches, a good belly rub and even better: full-focus cuddles are what give this dog life.
- Consistency is key. He can be just as dumb as smart and stubborn in both so if you want him to (not) do something and count on it, you have to always say what you do and do what you say.
- Every nuance in your voice and mood will be noted. This means I can hum some commands but the flip side is that he’ll hear if I’m unsure.
- A few days or a week of more or less exercise are fine with him, gives him a chance to play at being a couch potato.
- He loves humans, kids especially. There is a big switch between ‘on-guard-protector’ and ‘cuddles-cuddles-cuddles’.
- He’ll listen to the rest of my family but if I even hint at a contradicting command or if they can’t get him to do something and I take the breath to issue the same command it becomes abundantly clear where his loyalties lie. That’s not to say he listens to me 100% of the time (plenty of threats that he’ll be barbecued) but he does have one ‘boss’; rising in his esteem is solely accomplished by doing stuff together. It also helps that my immediate family are Borsoi people through and through and absolutely not working dog people.
- King doesn’t do well in hot weather. Anything above 22°C and he is noticeably less enthusiastic about life. If it gets to 27°C or it’s annoyingly sunny and/or humid it will affect his health. Be careful.
- King LOVES water. …and mud and digging.

If you’re a better trainer than I am, you will be able to do wonders here for the potential he has but otherwise, these are in the same category as above. These are the things where I have recognized I don’t have the necessary skill and experience but the dog could very well be capable.
- This dog will alert you to danger and, if pressed, do something about it. We did some protection training but my skill level wasn't able to safely shape his natural talent in this area. For example: when I was wearing a sleeve we trained like an advanced game of tug and every part was under control, but when someone else wears a sleeve/suit he goes into defence mode and doesn’t go for the fabric but for a spot he knows can neutralize the threat. Great for a real emergency but on a fully suited decoy that results in laser-focus on his throat… ***The people at K9 Security Ireland did some protection training with him and all of our opinions is that he will protect what is his when the situation needs it but he does not take the play training seriously. When he has nothing to seriously protect (when I wasn't there) he has no desire to play at it.***
- Under my tutelage, King does not do that well with other dogs. I read the signs as him being very dominant and controlling but am not sure. With puppies he is fine, as well as adult dogs that are completely unimpressed by his initial dominance display. He has one friend in the form of a female Dutch Shepherd of the same age that has the same traits, another is a Cocker Spaniel male with the same traits and even more testosterone but they have a deal or something and the last weird thing is my groomers’ gigantic orange cat that almost took his eye out but then they fell asleep together (all other cats are prey in his eyes). He will not act like some dogs going crazy from a distance at all, instead, he will ignore them or be alert and ready but always controlled. That saying about ‘barking dogs don’t bite’, in situations with dogs this holds very true for King: he won’t bark. If the other dog gets to that aggressive/attack kind of bark, King will growl like hell. As he got older his tolerance for bullshit got higher and lately I get a good surprise every so often. I think it comes down to boundaries. King does way better with dogs that set clear boundaries and enforce those. We both enjoy the solo walks way better, so that's what we do. Your situation might very well look different. ***At K9 Security Ireland their concensus was that he tolerates females more often and he is rarely not dominant towards other males. And, when other dogs aer clear about their boundries, he respects that and likes then way better.***
- Let’s talk food and possession. By trial and error, we have negotiated a truce. Meals are best served in his bench and a bone with meat may be a touchy subject for the first 5 minutes, after that and in all other situations he will give you anything without issue.


I will brag a bit about a few cool things, just to give an idea of my mindset and approach to life and taking a dog along.
We can do three hours by train, go shopping at the fair, go sailing, play football, do cool obedience routines, take a daylong kayak route, go B&B’ing, chill at Schiphol Airport, work at a circus and live in a caravan in winter for four weeks, visit a parade in Rotterdam, work on the farm all day, go camping, attend school and explore where one probably should not go.
KING HAS A NATURAL TALENT FOR SEARCH AND RESCUE, LOVES WORKING WITH HIS NOSE, can be carried in arms and in a backpack, will search for a hidden ball endlessly and go through anything doing it, will run with you when you run, skate or cycle and both bench and free roaming is fine day or night. ***And we can drive all day and take the overnight ferry in stormy weather and he'll be fine. We had a lovely week travelling and exploring Ireland before and after his training.***
This isn’t everything, just what randomly popped into my head when I felt like bragging.


I have had family dogs before though those were of a wildly different temperament. A substantial amount of knowledge was gained beforehand by training with the KNPV and scouring the internet every moment of free time for a solid year (this really is no exaggeration). Literally, everything the dog was to learn was written down; the commands, rules, behaviours and situations were ordered by priority and had contingencies and ample notes to fall back on. In the last four years, I have done a study about animal care and have done internships at a few places that have really improved my skills. The breeds listed as ones I have experience with range from 50 Siberian Huskys at my sled-dog kennel internship to about 10 Shepherds and Spaniels interning with a detection dog training company. The Borzoi were our family dogs.
My tendency to be bullheaded after I have done sufficient research next to my willingness to learn when I see I am in the wrong, have been of the greatest help.
